The Roanoke Star, an 88-foot star first lit in 1949, rests atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia which is known as the "Star City." Once, a certain professor was living and working in the Star City and thereby found inspiration for the name of her original business, now volunteer effort: "Star City Web Design."

Specializing originally in websites for small businesses, SCWD now focuses only on occasional volunteer efforts.
